  • Simple Past Tense


    Pattern : Subject + Verb 2.
    It is used to indicate past actions.
    Example ; I went to the supermarket yesterday.

    Term of reglar verbs :
    ·         Ending ed is added to the verbs. If the verbs end in letter e, they are only added by d.
    Ex : work à worked à worked
            Agree à agreed à agreed

    ·         If the verbs end in y and preceded by a consonant, y is changed into I and added by ed.
    Ex : study à studied à studied
    While those which end in y and preceded by a vowel, added by ed.
    Ex : stay à stayed à stayed

    ·         If the verbs (of one syllable) end in a consonant and preceded by a vowel, the consonant is doubled then added by ed.
    Ex : slip à slipped à slipped
    Except those which end in x and w
    Ex : mix à mixed à mixed

    ·         If the verbs (of two syllables) end in a consonant and the stredd is on the second syllable, the consonant is doubled then added ed.
    Ex : permit à permitted à permitted
